So you’re in Prague and ordered to self-contain. Listen, we know how you feel. We ALL know how you feel, because we’re all contained too. Anyway, your days of eating well and drinking well don’t have to be over even as restaurants are ordered to shut down and you really can’t go anywhere. Here’s a basic overview of your options during the times of ordered containment in Prague.
Disclaimer: please check before taking action. Things change not on a daily, but an hourly basis. We had to rewrite this piece several times over the weekend.
What’s allowed and what’s not
As of the writing of this (March 22), restaurants, bars, bistros, coffee shops may not open their premises to customers. However, they may run a take-out service from their premises. Therefore, it is perfectly viable for you to call a restaurant, order food, and pick it up through the essay abolishment’s window or door. Some coffee stands are opened as usual, since they have no seating arrangements. On top of that, restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops and the like may sell whatever they sell through food delivery services.
Grocery shops may stay open and most of them do. Be mindful that the government has set aside certain shopping hours for seniors only, so please go whenever you actually may go. Sadly, some pubs have decided to sell beer through their windows or doors, which has lead to smaller crowds gathering in front of their doors, face masks down (since you can’t drink with your face mask on), especially in good weather. We honestly can’t cope. If the government ever decides to lock us in for good, this will be the reason. Oh well, Czechs and beer, we guess.
Prague food delivery services
You probably know the usual suspects: Wolt, Dáme jídlo and Uber Eats. They all have their own apps, so having a smartphone is a must. Once you log in, they will tell you what’s available in your area, because the apps will probably have a maximum radius or distance within which you may order. This applies mostly to restaurants, while the radius may be larger for products that don’t decay as much in time. For instance, we were able to order bread from Pekárna Praktika, although it’s not precisely in our neighborhood.
There are two more options. First, Liftago, which is normally a cab hailing app, now offers „small purchases“ deliveries. Basically, you call the restaurant or shop to make the order, then order a cab from the shop to your home, making sure you select the „small purchase“ option. The driver will pick up the order and pay it, and deliver it to your home. The ride and the purchase will be charged from your card registered with the app. Easy. We actually ordered flowers and got them delivered by Liftago and it was super easy and quick. Finally, ordr is a cooking-as-a-service app. They have a daily menu shipped from closed kitchens, so we’re guessing if you are super sensitive about the environment where your food was prepared, this might be your best option, as you may find comfort in the fact that they don’t have any customers liaising with the chefs for take-out service.
One last service: “kde se najim” by Storyous. The makers of the ubiquitous POS system have done the amazing job of putting together a website with a comprehensive list of all active restaurants throughout the country in less than five days. For some restaurants, the system also accepts orders and allows you to pay for them, thus minimizing the contact with the staff. You then just come to collect your order through the take-out window. Two things: (1) Storyous does not do deliveries; they only arrange take-outs, and (2) we’d use the map to see what’s available around you.
The Cheat Sheet

Shops
Grocery stores and specialized shops are generally open but may have different opening hours. Shops for non-essential shopping (like design stores and such) are shut down. Here’s some of our favorite online and offline food and wine shops:
WineGeek: free delivery on anything from his rich portfolio of cool natural wines
Bartida: open only to collect online orders of alcohol
Svět bedýnek: the popular service that distributes boxes of farmer’s produce is running their deliveries as usual, trying their best to keep up with the demand
Z ruky do huby: This is an amazing Facebook group where independent farmers and small, family-owned food businesses offer their products to the general public. No sales through the group - the farmers just post what they do, their contacts and where you can pick up your orders. The rest is up to you.
Anyway, stay safe, healthy and sane, and let’s all hope our favorite people who prepare our favorite foods and drinks will pull through this unharmed. See ya around!
